Hey guys,
Can somebody please narrow down everything the deacon that replies "Pray for the Holy Gospel" is supposed to do. From which side of the altar to exit/enter? Is he supposed to immediately enter the altar after replying?

Michael,

At the end of the Trisagion Hymn, the deacon brings the censer to the priest and offers the incense to him. Then, he descends from the left hand side of the altar (from the perspective of exit) and goes to stand behind the priest. It is most faithful practice to stand behind and to the right of the priest, so that when the priest prays,"Irini Pasin", the deacon is not in the way. (Acolyte's Training Manual, Fr. Athanasius Iskander) The deacon chants the reply and then waits until the end of the priest's part. Then, following the priest, he ascends into the altar from the right hand side (from perspective of entering) and stands in front of the priest, walking backwards. Walking backwards as the priest recites the prayer of Simeon the Elder, the deacon then should head back to the left-hand side of the altar (from perspective of exit) to chant "Statheete...".

Hope that answers your question,

sotirmou.

This perspective of exit thing is kind of confusing, can we use the term "men's side" and "women's side" lol. I understand that those are not the official names or even discriptions but for my sake of confusion Smile

THe deacon exits from teh men's side and goes back in the altar on the women's side. As long as the priest outside the altar, the deacon has to be outside as well.

I will have to disagree, the litany of the gospel is actually the only time when the deacon should enter through the main door since he is holding the gospel in his hand exiting from the left side and entering from the right...

I thought we shouldn't be entering from the main door? And why do we wait?
