Live the digital life in stylish simplicity. Just 6.5 inches wide and 2 inches tall, Mac mini provides what you need to have more fun with your music, photos and movies — right out of the box. And it boasts a miniscule price to match: Mac mini starts at $499.

This is nice Very Happy

Actually, 1.42Ghz is quite weak, but still decent for what Macs are priced at. Anyways, to answer your question (if it wasn't rhetorical), Pentium 4 processors are usually around 2Ghz, but they usually vary. I've seen some Pentium 4's go up to 3.5 Ghz. And if that's not fast enough you can always overclock it...

I see that Apple recycled their PowerCube of old. How innovative.

and someone misunderstood my question...How fast should a PC be (using Pentium speed) to match up the speed of a 1.42GHz PowerPC G4 Processor?

Mind you...1.42 GHz may "seem" slow, but for a MAC...I think it's faster than 2 GHz, but I just want to sure.

God bless.

PC users are too caught up in megahertz; I don't think many realize that other factors in a PC contribute to a perceived boost or lack of speed.

One of the most important factors is the operating system and the overarching architecture of the system. Because Apple computers and operating systems are made by Apple, the total user experience in terms of speed is more than satisfying.

I currently have an iBook G4 1.25 GHz with 768 MB RAM. The speed is more than sufficient for me to use the iBook as my primary computer at work. With it, I access a Windows network (complete with all of the Windows printers,) use Wordperfect for Windows via VirtualPC, keep Entourage open for e-mail/calendaring, and switch back to Microsoft Word for OS X on a minute basis. The iBook handles it with ease; I never wait frustratingly for anything.

The Mac Mini appears to have sufficient speed to keep users happy for years.

coptichymns.net started the mass Coptic movement to Macs in 2000. Since that time, I personally have converted 27 Copts to Macs, with 2 more in progress. Not a single one of them has complained to me about their choice. For this reason, and because I myself am a happy switcher, I strongly encourage anyone reading this thread to research Macs, be it the Mac Mini, iMac, eMac, or any other Mac, more thoroughly. I will be happy to answer any and all questions to the best of my knowledge, as well MinaS, SaintMina, and the others who have switched.

Microsoft won't ship a new OS until 2006 or 2007, and that OS will not have 1/2 the features and innovation coming with Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger," which ships this May, I believe. This is the perfect time to get a Mac to use along your PC or even switch altogether.

GBU,
ps

Also, please see this outlining how Apple's new Mac Mini may become a huge threat to HP--indeed, to all PC makers.

Apple is doing very, very well.

http://money.cnn.com/2005/01/12/technol ... tm?cnn=yes

Much of it is iPod, but Mac sales have also skyrocketed according to the article.

Again, this is the perfect time for people frustrated with PCs to buy a Mac as a second computer or switch altogether.

Happiness and productivity await you.

Interesting C|Net article on the new Mac Mini.

Quotes of interest:

With respect to innovation, "Price considerations aside, the Mac Mini is unlike other PCs on the market. At 6.5 inches wide by 6.5 inches deep by 2 inches high, the unit, which weighs just less than 3 pounds, is far smaller and more stylish than "small" PCs. Dell's small desktop PC takes up about four times the volume. Small PC specialist Shuttle makes a unit that measures 7 inches by 8 inches by 11.4 inches and weighs 13 pounds."

Most honest quote:
Quote:
"Intel and some of its industrial-design partners have done a lot of 'concept PCs', but mostly they've been trying to reverse-engineer Apple's sense of style--and without much success so far," said Peter Glaskowsky, a technology commentator and Newton user.

In all fairness, if you want a Mac Mini with all of the possible options, like Wifi, Bluetooth keyboard/mouse, etc. the cost will hover around $1,300.

Nonetheless, analysts have applauded the Mac Mini. At this price, I don't see how anyone could resist buying a second computer for the home or switching altogether.

Even I was taken aback with this computer! In fact, my brother and I plan on buuying one each. Trust me, that says a lot!

I cannot understand why no PC makers or case makers have thought of moving the power supply to an external plug like this. Surely that would save a lot of space.

Check out this article, too: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/13/techn ... apple.html
Their profits went from $63 million to $295 million for the same quarter last year. Yes, that is 5x as much! Half the iPods sold in the past three years (10 million) was sold this last quarter! I even helped by giving on to my fiance for Christmas. Who says I am anti-Apple? Smile

Now the IPod shuffle, however, is another matter entirely! I'm sorry but the whole "no LCD" thing does not fly with me.
