Hello everyone,
I've heard many things on a book called, "The way of the pilgrim". Those who read it seem to find many beneficial spiritual lessons in it. Im finishing my exams next week and will probable get my hands on a copy then, but for now, can people pls post small extracts from the book and their little contemplations on it.

Hey,
The way of the pilgrim is an awesome book… I started reading it last year, and I love it! It talks about this guys search for what St. Paul calls, “praying without ceasing”
(I Thessalonians 5:17)
The main thing that I got out of it is Jesus Prayer, which is a prayer that the, “pilgrim” learned… It goes, “My Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me a sinner” (there are many different variations to it).
I personally, also loved the way that the monk taught this guy the Jesus Prayer (I don’t want to spoil it for you…..well, actually, I can’t find the quote haha)…. He gave an awesome meditation on how one should pray it. I don’t think that many people follow the exact way that this monk taught….
I personally couldn’t keep a continuous practice of the Jesus prayer… I started off really good, I would say it when I was walking, talking, in class, etc…. it was an ongoing thing, that I was doing more often each day. Eventually, I got really tired of it, and stopped saying it…. My advice to all those who are going to use it is take baby steps, I didn’t take baby steps and I ended up giving up this wonder practice….

I would not recommend taking up any spiritual exercises without the supervision of your Confession Father. They can actually be very dangerous and end up bringing you down rather than up. In that case, "the last state is worse than the first".

I would love to, but I'm not going to. Pick up a copy of the book, read it, savour it, and learn from it. I think that'll be the best way for you  .
George, if you remember the story correctly, the pilgrim was under the guidance of a monk who taught him the prayer and told him how many to do fur such and such a time. You should;ve done the same thing with your father of confession, as xodohtrO (Orthodox  ) advised you.

Yeh, i remember from what people have told me that it mentions the "My Lord Jesus Christ have mercy upon me a sinner." For now, until I actually get to read the whole book, could someone please post what the "pilgrim" says once his home is burnt? I remember going, "wwooooooowww" when I heard that particular part in the book.

St Amvrosy, one of the Optina elders in Russia thought the pilgrim the possessor of a special talent given only to a few. My spiritual father told me that using the Jesus prayer as prayer is beneficial but advanced practices mentioned by some should be avoided as dangerous.
I carry beads with me all the time and tell the beads whilst reciting the prayer whilst I am walking or waiting. I also stayed with a monk in Shrewsbury, England who, instead of reciting the hours, recites the Jesus prayer at length. |
