ok so we all heard about how pope benidict was in the mosque in turkey , and when it was prayer time for islam ...he pointed toward mecca out of respect for those around him and stood their " meditateing" ( as the news sources said )
do u think it was wrong ?
though the end result was good , it gained favor from the turkish community. however , do u think it was ...... wrong to actually point toward mecca and .... meditate ....
im sure he wasnt reciteing islamic verses .. but i just think ( who am i to ponder ? ) that it may have been alittle ... not good ... it shows respect for a religion of hate , sex ,women , lies .... how can we respect a religion like that ? tell me what in islam should i respect ..?
i dont get why people say , u should respect other peoples religion .....
this religion is calling jews and christians pigs and monkeys and telling them to kill me ...
anyways
thoughts ? ... |

Well...Tony, our God is everywhere, so looking in any direction and meditating on correct Theology is not problematic in any way, in my opinion.
What would be the other option? look purposefully away from mecca and pray? that means giving his back to the front of the mosque where the podium is (not very sure of the internal architecture of a mosque). Doing that would be deliberate hostility, its provoking a group of people that already cannot wait to hate and direct attacks and doing that in their own place...if not disrespectful its at least not Christian and not something to expect from a Pope. |

Hello,
All humans have a sinful nature since Adam and Eve fell into sin and rebelled against God. So, the evil things that people do are generally not created or encouraged by religion, for if people followed their religions properly, these things would not occur. Certainly, if people practiced Christianity correctly as Christ intended it, we wouldn't have as many of these vices in the world.
That's not to say that correct practice of religion automatically makes a person infallible. For example, in the Paradise of the Fathers, there are many examples of blessed monks falling into sins of fornication, envy, lying, disobedience, &c. In all of these stories, it is clear that Satan redoubled his efforts to ensnare them, because they practiced their religion correctly. He wished them to fall and did everything he could to accomplish this goal. And they fell.
But crucially, in most of these stories, a holy person's fall is followed by repentance and a resurrection from a state of sin to a former state of purity. This is exactly what Christianity is all about. We may have millions of Christians in the world practicing nothing but vices. If they do not repent, they are not fulfilling Christ's commandment. If they do repent, the vices should not perpetually be held against them, since they fell and sought to rise after the fall.
Some people think Islam is a different story, however, because the vices of which I spoke are sometimes construed as being part of the religion itself. Thus, having sex with forty virgins is not an example of a person failing to follow Islam; it is an example of what Muslims desire as part of their religion. I think this is what causes people to make the distinction, even though all humans--irrespective of religion--share in the same vices, because of their sinful nature.
GBU,

Paul,
Do you do evangelism of Muslims? I notice Jehovah's Witnesses is very active here in Amman, Jordan and elsewhere in the Arab world. |
