I was wondering has there been any effort to update the Coptic vocabulary with fairly recent words like computer, automobile, aeroplane, etc.? It seems like this would be essential for the revival of the Coptic language. |

When Modern Hebrew was formed, many words were borrowed from Russian, German, and English. Perhaps Coptic should similarly borrow words from its "host" languages...i.e. Greek, Arabic, English  |

I remember seeing a list of coptic equivalents of modern terms. I don't remeber where, I believe it was either from H.G. Bishop Demetrius (Bishop of Mallawi) or Fr, Shenouda Maher Ishak (currently serving in Rochester, NY). You could try contacting either one of them both are Coptic scholars. |

hey peter ..im pretty sure its father shenouda from rochester..because when we were there..he was giving us a mini lesson in modern coptic terms..like airoplane, car, and such.but as u said bishop demetrius is also a scholar so im sure he has knowledge of this. |

I heard that only a few families still speak Coptic as their native language, but there really aren't that many people that know enough Coptic to speak it as well as we do English. |

There are 2 active members of this site that come to mind that speak Coptic fluently. Atthowi and Remenkimi (an admin). Ramez Mikhail speaks fluent Greek. |

Correction:
I cannot speak Ancient Greek fluently. I can simply translate mainly from Ancient Greek to English. Having studied Ancient Greek on an academic level as an undergrad, they do not teach you to speak or converse in a dead language, but only to comprehend and translate written texts. |
