Greetings to all.

What practice do you follow in your church with regard to chanting "evsop" in Kara Nikhoros, the Communion hymn?

The following cantors chant it in an abbreviated fashion:

1) Master Cantor Mikhail Girgis Gabriel El-Batanouny
2) Cantor Farag Abd El-Massih

The following cantors chant it in a melismatic fashion:

1) Cantor Fahim Girgis
2) Cantor Ibrahim Ayad (Who, by listening to his version, appears to have learned it from Cantor Fahim)
Albair, leader of HCOC, also chants it melismatically.

I've yet to hear a recording for Cantor Tewfik but it would not surprise me if he was the source for the additional verses recorded by Albair. Albair, I would be interested in learning your source for the additional verses. The rest of the cantors do not continue after the first verse.

I have not heard a recording of Cantor Sadek Atallah chanting Kata Nikhoros. In addition to this HICS does not chant the hymn on their release of the recordings of the hymns of the Resurrection. Fr. Mettias Nasr Mankarious, in his interview on the HCOC web site, mentions that he doesn't know who taught the HICS students for that production but in listening to it there appears to be a heavy Cantor Sadek influence. Despite this both Cantor Farag and Cantor Ibrahim Ayad are present. Cantor Farag chants Kara Nikhoros, the hymn of the veil and Cantor Ibrahim chants the verses of the cymbals, Psalm 150, and others throughout.

So, I'd be interested in assembling more facts on this hymn using everyone's collective knowledge. Albair, it would be great if you can chime in as well.

All i know is that there is a major and minor way for saying this hymn, and i believe most churches say the minor way for the sake of time.

There are two different hymns entitled "Kata Nikhoros". The one you reference on that page, chanted by Cantor Tewfik, is Kata Nikhoros, the Hymn of the Veil. The one I am referencing in this thread is Kata Nikhoros, the Communion hymn. They are different hymns, with different words and tunes.

I would like to say that I found a version of this hymn chanted by what I'm thinking are Mu'allim Mikhail students. I found it on one of the 20-something Mu'allim Mikhail tapes. I'll have to attach it so you can hear it. However, I don't remember which version the say, the long or short "Evsop"...will check it out.

I liked the fact that you compared the different sources in order to sing the "right" way. It is known that the 3 hymns of the 50 days could be chanted the long way or the short way. The 3 hymns are: Kata Nie Khoros (communion), Tomas and Afraik Etfe. As for the rest of the verses, no one "rakkebhom" before. It is always known among cantors that they should be the same music as the first verse, but no one actually "rakkebhom". So, for the rest of the verses, I adjusted the words to the music so that they could be chanted. Cantor Mikhail always records one way of the hymn, so in Praxionton, he recorded the long only, same with Apekran. He didn't record the different ways of the hymn. We have to get them from his disciples.

Can anyone help me get recordings of the chant for the Verses of the Cymbals. I am studying the text and music for the Christmas service, and would appreciate knowing how many verses might be sung that evening. How many melodies are known to you for this text and where can I hear them. Does anyone have a transcription of the melody?
