check out what i found:

While the Bible does not explicitely say it is flat, it does not say the earth is a sphere.
But it is clearly implied that it is flat; the earth is presented as a circle with heaven above and hell below and ends; with a sphere there is no up nor down. To make it even more silly: the bibles also gives that there are corners...corners on a sphere? If you can draw me a sphere with up and down where you have 4 corners and edges with a heaven above and a hell below, just try.
There are even far more problems with astronomy in the Bible:
1 Chronicles 16:30: “He has fixed the earth firm, immovable.”, Psalm 93:1: “Thou hast fixed the earth immovable and firm ...” Psalm 96:10: “He has fixed the earth firm, immovable ...” the earth is even set on pillars and suspended.
Geocentrism; the sun, moon and starts moving around the Earth...we know how incorrect that it don'T we? We've got satelites flying but we never had any crashing onto a pillar or the hook on which earth would be suspended. Even more, according to the bible we should not even be able to fly airplanes as the sky is solid ((Job 37:18 ) Can you, like him, spread out the skies, hard as a molten mirror? (Prov 8:28 NRSV) when he made firm the skies above, … )

can some one please explain?

Agape,

Let me tell u something: not a single ancient civilization that we know of (i.e. that left writings) believed that the earth was flat.

People had common sense: if the earth was flat, you could see Hong Kong from New York. Everyone knew that because there is a horizon, the earth was curved.

wel i got a thought.

All the things you just mentioned, aren't prophecies. What they wrote was based on the beliefs back then. Right?

I think these are more symbollic verses about how God is looking over us thus Heaven above us and how hell is not a great place thus Hell below us. Four corners of the earth is not literal either. when people say four corners of the earth it is saying the entire world in a sense. From the north to the south from the east to the west. hope that helps

Dear MHNA,

Even if the Bible contained scientific errors, it should not effect the spiritual infallibility of the Bible. The Bible was not written to be inerrant in all other things, like history, science, or geology. The Bible was written for spirituality, doctrines, and some important aspects of history.

Therefore, if the intention in the Bible was to say the world was flat, then so be it. It's no different than St. Basil, who was also inspired by the Holy Spirit, writing that the world was created in six literal days. The Bible was written by men inspired by the Holy Spirit who were inspired to write the greatest works in spirituality, and sometimes to write things that either were their own thinking or an imagery that is to be taken allegorically.

The verses that you give can also have an allegorical meaning behind it, not literal. I do agree with Biboboy however that there seems to be very few civilizations (only one I can think of) that thought the world was flat.

God bless.
