Some languages have masculine forms of the name "Mary", such as "Marion" in English, "Mario" in Italian, and "Mariano" in Spanish. Is there a male Coptic name such that boys can be named after St. Mary? |

Interesting question! I don't know if there exists any masculine form of "Mary" in coptic, but I do know at least one kid named Mario at my church  . And I wonder if that would make "asinner" Luigi? lol jks

Oddly enough the Coptic(possibly Greek) masculine form of Mary/Maria is Marina (or as it is spelled in the the Paradise of the Fathers, Maryana). According to the story, St. Marina was named Maria but changed it to Marina (Maryana) to disguise as a boy.

Peter, thanks for the reference. Budge's Paradise of the Holy Fathers is primarily translated from Arabic and Ethiopic (Geez?). The Greek life of St. Marina says her feminine name was Mary (not Marina) and her masculine name is Marinos. Take a look here. Keep in mind, this doesn't mean Marinos is the masculine equivalent of Mary. All it means is that St. Mary/Marina's father changed her name from Mary to Marinos. Her father may simply have created the name right there. I think Marinos is a Greek cultural influence. Mary is originally Mariam in Hebrew and I am very certain there was no masculine equivalent.

Thanks for the correction, for some reason thought the Paradise was translated from the Greek and Syriac. True the new name is not necessarily a direct maculine form of Mary. |
