That's Max Michel, kicked out of the Coptic Church a long time ago, got appointed bishop by a bunch of unordained "bishops," and is claiming he is the rightful archbishop of the Coptic Church. Absurd.
I like how his evidence that the recording is of Coptic Bishops is, "I'm familiar with his voice." Apparently he's also familiar with another bishop's voice whom he does not know personally. Very itriguing.
1) Looks like this story needs much more investigation for us to take it as true. I'm not saying it's not true (I don't know). I'm saying the evidence in this clip doesn't stand. The anchor wouldn't even play the tape because it's unsubstantiated.
2) If it's true, oh well. Life in Egypt is easier for Muslims than for Christians. This has nothing to do with the Church and everything to do with people wanting an easier life. Can the Church do something to try and stop it? Sure, we can engage in a massive level of apologetics ("defenses") of the faith. |

Bishops must be ordained by the Pope only, right? How did he become bishop? What was his jurisdiction? How long ago was he a "bishop?" When and why was he kicked out? I don't know a thing about him..
Is this him? There are 2 bishop maximos, one looks nothing like him, this one could...

He's on the 2nd row from the bottom, second person. |

Technically, a bishop does not need to be ordained by the Pope (although now, the Pope's always involved to my knowledge). It just takes three bishops to ordain a bishop. This was passed at the Council of Nicea in 325 AD (Canon 4).
I'm going to write the join statement between the Coptic Orthodox and Greek Orthodox Churches of Alexandria:
"This person, who was a 'reader,' left the Coptic Orthodox Church in 1976 and started his schismatic activities outside the Church. He got married and has two children. Later, in 2005, he claimed he was ordained by the name Maximos in Nebraska, USA, as bishop of Egypt and Middle East, calling his church St. Athanasius Church. In 2006 he declared himself archbishop of Egypt and the Middle East taking the name Maximos I.
We reject the false ordination of this person, because he was ordained by bishops who are not recognized by any Orthodox Church. According the the canon of Orthodox Church, the patriarch, the archbishop or the bishop of an Orthodox Church should not be married, but be celibate."

He's not in the Coptic Synod (the pictures of the Bishops in the Synod are what's on the St. Takla site). He's a heretic as far as we're concerned. He wasn't ordained in the Coptic Church. This is like you, me, and someone else decide we're bishops then ordain another person archbishop of Egypt. |

He was presumably ordained over the phone lol. This guy sooooooo full of it and I seriuosly cannot believe he is trying to represent himself as "coptic." I forgot why he was kicked out though... can someone care to give an explanation?

Truth.Seeker, thank you for the information. Do you live close to me, I would like me and you to ordain me a Metropolitan. HG Bishop Abanoub sounds great =)
Wow there should be certain things that Al Jazeera should put up, but then again it is Muslim driven. I am going on youtube and posting comments to defend us. Pray I do not get "jumped." |

Or is it? LOL
I can't believe this. It was broadcasted on Al Jazeera, not Muslims everywhere are certain this is true. I went to youtube and posted on a bunch of videos. I can't believe that Al Jazeera network would stoop that low. I am pretty sure they know he is excommunicated. |

Oh yeah, they're certain he's excommunicated, they just don't care. And when you question them, they'd just say, "hey, we didn't say it was true, we're just saying that this is what this guy said." |
