How did David come to know of the Holy Spirit? I understand the Holy Spirit has been there from the beginning, but we never received it till the pentecost...

I would not say until Pentecost. Liturgy of St. Basil says, "who of the Holy Spirit and of the Holy Virgin Mary was incarnate and became man." So there is one evidence of the Holy Spirit being before Pentecost. |

Dear John,
The Holy Spirit was recievied in the Old Testament as well, but it was to sanctify kings and priests. Therefore in the Old testament the Holy Spirit was recieved to accomplish a certain task, but was not to dwell in Humanity, but rather sanctify humanity to do the work of God like in Isaiah where he said "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me. To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;" (Isaiah 61:1) So the Holy Spirit was upon David to be sanctified a king before the lord.

Another example is from the creed, where we say, "Who with the father and the Son, is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets." |

The Holy Spirit did play a role in lives pre-Pentecost. take the prophets for example. Many times they started a prophesy by saying "Thus says the Lord...". To know what the Lord says, one must either speak to Him or have been spoken to by someone who has spoken to Him. Now sometimes, people did directly speak to God i.e. Moses on Mt Sinai. However, in many instances, there is no direct conversation or mediator that spoke on behalf of God. This is an example of the Holy Spirit in the old testament (OT). Post-Pentecost/post-baptism, we have a little flame inside of us that we can either enlarge or nearly-diminish. This flame is the Holy Spirit given to us at baptism (to keep). We become thrones for the Most-High. The prophets and righteous people of the OT, however, did not have the sacrament of baptism. The Holy Spirit to them, was a gift in which the Lord gave them but not permanently. Not everyone received the Holy Spirit. God could send and take away this gift from them. This is why David is pleading to Lord asking Him not to take it away. Hope this makes sense/helps |

Also to add something to what everyone said is that when God created adam and eve, He breathed the Spirit of Life in them(the holy Spirit) and after the fall during the time of noah God says My Spirit will no longer dwell with man for they are wicked(not an exact quote, i don't have a Bible infront of me) so that shows that we originally had His Spirit in us but it was taken away and only given to chosen prophets kings judges etc. |
