I am quite curious to know, His Grace was clearly a monk before he became a bishop. How come he does not have the kolonsowa which covers the ears? I am only interested to know because I cognize that monks/bishops wear a kolonsowa as meaning they are closing their ears to the world and only focusing on Our Savior. May God compensate you. |

Are you talking about Anba Abraham of Fayoum (the saint)? ..... well even if you are not i can answer this question...... from the time of pope kyrillos bishops and metropolitans didn't have to wear the kolonsowa, however, when pope shenouda took the chair he made it a rule that everyone MUST wear a kolonsowa. I'm pretty sure it was an old picture that you saw, even other bishops that you see in an older picture, some don't have it on....... if you are talking about another bishop in todays time that isn't wearing one then we have a problem

Thank you for answering that question.
Even though he is not a bishop, Father Abdel Messih the Makarian--a monk--does not wear it in the pictures.
About the picture of Bishop Abraam, it is the regular picture we are familiar with. Thank you. May God compensate you. |

I just want to clarify something. Most of you likely know this already but just in case someone reading our posts does not or misunderstands some of the above. It was H.H. Pope Shenouda III who REINSTATED the rule that all monks (therefore also bishops) should wear the Kolonsowa (head covering). I don't want people to think it was just something His Holiness came up with out of no where without any reasoning behind it. The kolonsowa was originally used and taught by St. Anthony and then made a rule for the monks by St. Athanasius but lost some where along the way. Now HH has brought it back thank God. It's also important to note that the Syrian Orthodox also have this tradition in their church from the same origins (in their church it's known as the eskimo not to be confused with the schema).

I was just wondering if you have a source for Saint Athanasius establishing it as a rule for all monks to wear the kolossowa/kolonsowa. Saint Athanasius himself wore the uniform of monks, but I wasn't aware that he required the monks to wear it.
Cassians Institutes also makes reference to it as being established as well.

Yes sorry i should have claryfied. Pope Shenouda III bought back the rule like i mentioned. Before that any monk or bishop or metropolitan didnt have to wear it. And im sure you can find St. Athanasis mentioning something about it. If not then its really common sense. Since he was the pope at St. Antonys time and when it was given to St. Antony it was said that monks should wear that so obviosuly from then on that was the atire for all monks.  |
