Can someone please find me the coptic translation of the Psalm for the vespers of this upcoming sunday. http://www.copticchurch.net/classes/get ... y=01&tom=1
The psalm is there but i couldn't get the verse and the reading to match up on the Remenkimi coptic bible. Thanks in advance. God bless.
by the way, here it is!:
Psalm 105:23,27
Israel also came into Egypt,
And Jacob dwelt in the land of Ham.
He increased His people greatly,
And wonders in the land of Ham. |

Here's a rough translation from my own knowledge of Coptic. It should suffice:
Icrayl on afi `e`pkahi `n<ymi
ouoh afswpi `nje Iakwb qen `pkahi `nHam
aferhouo `emasw `nje peflaoc
nem ni`svyri qen `pkahi `nHam.
=Al

Nice try Epideacon. Here is the text. Note the Coptic text I have says the reference is Psalm 114:11, 12. In another manuscript I have, it is Psalm 114: 23, part of 24 and 28.

This is one of the things that puzzle me in Coptic; how would the name be pronounced when it spells as "Xam"?

I was puzzled about that too. I think it has something to do with the word "Ham" being originally a Hebrew word, thus a Hebrew name. Then it got translated into Greek in the Septuagint and the translators used the Greek letter
,
[ki]. Then, when they were translating it into coptic, I imagined that since it is not an Original Coptic word, they just kept the spelling they say in the Greek version.
If I had to guess I would say it should be pronounced [xam] "kham" even though I know in Arabic it's "Ham". |
