Quote:
Another major difference of opinions between Sadat and Pope Shenouda III is the attitude of the latter regarding the normalization of the relations between Egypt and Israel. In fact, there is currently (as of 2006) a papal decree issued by Pope Shenouda III that anathematizes any Copt who visits the Christian holy places in Jerusalem and Israel.[7] According to that decree, such Copts are automatically banned from receiving Holy Communion in the Coptic Orthodox Church, with no venue or mechanism being offered to them for repentance and lifting of this ban. Pope Shenouda III has repeatedly declared that Christians must only visit Jerusalem hand in hand with their Muslim brothers after the conflict with Israel is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.

An additional motivation for supporting the ban on trips to Jerusalem, beyond solidarity, involves some tension that arose over a dispute about possession of some property in the Church of the Resurrection which was wrongfully removed from the possession of the Coptic Church.

If one of us was to visit Isreal, would we necessarily be banned from taking communion?

It is true that Pope Shenouda has decreed that any Copt making a trip to the Holy Land to visit would be banned from communion indefinitely. I believe there are a few topics about this on the site if you want to learn a bit more about it.

Until when is this true? Because someday in the future, I would like to visit the holy land. Can you please tell me where the topics are? Thank you.

I am going to listen to him for now because I know he has our best interest at heart. It is just not safe to go the holy land because of all the wars. It is just like remember when there was E-coli in spinach and they had to pull spinach off the shelves to protect the public. He is only trying to protect his children the same way any parent would. However, when it is safe and allowed to go, I would like to go to see where our lord was born, lived and died.

I've personally heard of many stories where people have went, and just received absolutions from their priests, and were permitted to receive Holy Communion once again (which I am not saying is right), but I think it shows the triviality of the matter (Since I believe he is saying it to appease the government).

I thought it was Jerusalem not Israel. That's funny...

God Bless

The whole idea of His Holiness' decree is that he doesn't want issues with the Muslim community. He said himself that the only way he will go to Jerusalem is if he going with the head sheihk (spelling is probably wrong sorry) so as to not create problems with Coptics and Muslims.

The person will have to confess to Abouna that they visited Jerusalem in order to receive communion.
