"The title tells it all! Have you ever thought of dedicating some time of your life to the lord? Do you have fantasies of going in mission and share the Good News to people? Have you ever dreamed ofvolunteering for a humanitarian cause? This could be your chance!
The idea is to form a Coptic Order called "6 Months for Christ" or "6M4C". You sign up for service for 6 months, a year or two years. In signing up, you submit yourself to whatever service you are asked to perform, you don't have to care for your monastery matter, the order will take care of your human needs.
The 6 months begins with an orientation for 3 weeks in a monastery in order to be filled with the Spirit and grace. After that, you will be dispatched to your service station.
The service could be in our mission fields in Africa, Fiji, Japan or Latin America! It could be jump starting and organize the service in a new church in North America or Europe! It could be volunteering in Egypt with a humanitarian organization like Coptic Orphans or Littlest Lamp. It could be youth outreach in one of our great school cities like Boston, you name it.Your service could be tailored to fit your talents and personality, if you are in a medical profession, you could join one of our Coptic Hospitals like our famous hospital in Kenya. If you are a geek, you could build the computer infrastructure in one of our organization. If you are a nerd you can help translate books to different languages. May be teach English in Japan and serve with Abouna Thomas! What ever your talent, the church want you to bless it by offering it to Christ.
There will be a spiritual order as well, for the period of 6 months you will have certain amount of prayers and reading everyday, just as monks.
This 6 months would be a blessing for your whole life, you will benefit from it spiritually and socially alike."
This idea floated between some Coptic youth, we want to share it here to get your feedback on it before proposing it to the Church leaders! We were thinking of proposing this idea to Aboun Anstasi but thought of getting as much feedback as possible before proposing it. Would you consider joining? If not, what makes you unable to join, can you think of what changes in this plan would make you consider this service? Your positive or negative input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks! |

the idea is awesome...a few months ago, HG Bishop Youssef brought it up in one of our conventions. However, if someone is interested, he should do it in his church. At least the impression i get is that churches need these kind of ppl. But obviously this movement sounds awesome...but maybe just add the idea of serving in/for your own church.
I pray that you guys keep on developing the thought!

It definitely is an excellent idea.
However, how would it work with education? |

Thanks John for the info, it is really interesting, I'd like to know more about what Anba Youssef said, do you have more details? Serving in the local church is definitely a good idea. A more centralized approach to the project would help propagate the idea and encourage more people to participate. Besides, if anyone decided to dedicate x amount of months to the Lord in the local church, what projects will he/she work on. It will be easier if there is a system that direct those people instead of leaving them in their own. Also, it will provide volunteers in the places where they are needed most!
Thanks Dioscorus for your response! I didn't understand what do you mean by "how would it work with education?". Do you mean the volunteers have school and stuff, so where will they find the time to volunteer? If that was the question, I was thinking of this project for people who just graduated and are in the process of kicking off their careers. We can definitely extend the project to accommodate for undergraduates by having a 3 months version of the program for them in the summer! What do you think about that?
So here is the question again for everybody; Would you volunteer for 6 months? Why or why not? What changes to the proposal that would make you volunteer?
Thanks
In Christ.

Yes, that is what I meant. I apologize.
I would volunteer for a summer program, if such a thing were offered. |

hey Ray,
HG had brought it up quickly so my memory is a little vague, but what i understood was that if we were interested then one should go to the priest of the church and for sure he'd be able to find services to help around the chuurch. if you're looking for more ideas, im sure you could go ask your priests for what type of services can be done full time...
Hope it helps.
