I was wondering if anyone can possibly find for me the english text of this amazing liturgy, and possibly some background information on this liturgy. I know our brothers the Ethiopians use this liturgy and is known as the liturgy of Youhanna el habashi. I know the site has a couple recordings of the liturgy, but why is it not used anymore. It is so deep theologically, and quite emotional in my opinion. Anywho, I tried to do some research on it, but came up with very little. Love to hear more concerning this liturgy, especially the english text, and why its not used in our Church.

Hi, I have the text in english if you want, its a shame that the priest hardly use this mass anymore, for you are right it has such a level of spirituality with great theological depth, if you give me your email i can send you the english version of this amazing liturgy. Quick question though from which abouna did you hear it from is it , abouna estephanos rizk? |

Just a quick question though, is there any other priest that has prayed this particular liturgy that we can listen to, or is it just abouna estephanos rizk? your help in the matter will be appreciated

I have posted below a pdf of not only the text of the Liturgy of St. John Son of Thunder, but of all the Anaphoras in the Orthodox Church specifically the Ethiopian. Posted below is also the anaphora of the St. Mary Liturgy (el odas el Maryami), and Anaphoras by St. John Chrysostom, on the Apostles, and by Jacob Serugh. Their is a contents page that can direct you to the text of the liturgy of your choice. Might I recommend listening to the above recording, or the one on Coptic hymns while reading the text. Get ready for an in-depth theological journey through the whole liturgy. There are also Anaphoras by St. Cyril, St. Athanasius, St. Basil, etc. Enjoy everybody.

So I found the part used by Fr. Stephanous Rizk in the beginning not included in the Ethiopian document, the following also attributed to St. John the Apostle and Beloved:
Priest: O Prince of Life and King of Ages, God unto whom every knee bows, of those in heaven, of those on earth, and of those under the earth; to whom everything is subject and in the bond of servitude, bowing their heads to the sceptre of Thy kingdom: Unto whom the armies of angels give glory together with the heavenly hosts, and all logical natures, with an unsilenced voice that utters Your divinity. And as You have taken pleasure in us, the poor inhabitants of the earth, that we should service to You, not because of the purity of our hands, for we have not done good upon the earth; but You are willing to grant us, the unfortunate and unworthy, of Your purity: accept us unto You O Good [God] and Lover of Mankind, as we approach Your holy altar according to the multitude of Your mercies. And make us worthy of the heavenly peace that suits Your divinity and is full of salvation that we may give it to one another in perfect love and that we may greet one another with a holy kiss.
Deacon: Pray for the perfect peace, love, and the holy apostolic kisses.
Priest: Not with spiteful thoughts, but with thoughts given to Your fear, free from guile and from the wickedness of the traitor so that our conscience is not at one with evil but with the gladness of our souls and joy of our hearts; for we have the great and perfect token of the love of Your Only-Begotten Son. Cast us not away, Your servants, because of the defilement of our sins, for You know, as our Creator, that no one born of a woman shall be justified before You. Therefore, make us worthy O our Master, with a pure heart and a soul full of Your grace, to stand and offer before You this holy, rational and bloodless sacrifice; for the forgiveness of our trespasses and the remission of the ignorances of Your people, for You are a compassionate and merciful God.
And You are to whom we send up the glory, the honor, the majesty and the worship [O God] the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and at all times and unto the age of all ages. Amen.

The fraction that he uses is the fraction of the Virgin Mary and the Angels.
I must say, this was indeed a beautiful liturgy. One can only wonder why have it removed (other than perhaps that it might be a bit too long)?

There were many anaphoras in the Coptic Church until around the 12th century, when Pope Gabriel II ordered the use of the three we now know in his Canon 26. I am not aware of this canon ever being reversed or overruled, so anyone celebrating one of these various anaphoras may be breaking the Church's law!
Nonetheless, for historical purposes, it is fascinating to study all of these anaphora.

What about the prayers of reconciliation like those of the Thrice Blessed John and by Saint Severus that are actually included in the Kholagy by the Southern Diocese?? |

I think this liturgy sounds very passionate, so I was trying to follow the pdf files so that I could understand it better (my arabic isn't very good)...anyway, I'm confused as to which .pdf he's reading from and where at in the .pdf file.

Good question. I am not sure, actually. Perhaps there is a distinction in that the Church has accepted three Anaphora or whole liturgies while these are simply individual Prayers of Reconciliation, which don't affect the remainder of the liturgy. |
